The Biomes and Vegetation of South Africa
نویسندگان
چکیده
At a global scale the vegetation of the world is sometimes described in terms of six Floristic Regions, often called the Floral Kingdom of the world. The distinction between regions is based on distinctive suites of flowering plants, taking into account those (particularly families) that are exclusive (endemic) to the region. Confined to South Africa is one of these distinct kingdoms; the Cape Floral Kingdom, covering 0.08% of the world's land surface, but containing about 3% of the world's plant species. For more information about the Cape Floral Kingdom, see Fynbos Biome below.

Vegetation structure and composition in the semi-arid Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape
Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape (MCL) woody vegetation was characterized to establish structural and compositional attributes. Stratified random sampling based on major soil types was used and nine plant variables were measured in 137(20x30) m2 sampling plots; these being genera, species and family names; basal circumference; plant height; depth and diameter of tree canopy; number of s...
متن کاملOxidative ratio (OR) of southern African soils and vegetation: updating the global OR estimate
Oxidative ratio (OR) is the ratio of moles O2 released per mole CO2 sequestered through photosynthesis in the terrestrial biosphere. The lower the OR value the more CO2 an environment can potentially sequester. It is this property of the organic matter that plays a role in models of CO2 partitioning between the atmosphere and the biosphere. Recent studies have shown that the accepted value of O...
متن کاملModeling Carbon Sinks and Sources in semi-arid Environments for a Land Degradation Assessment Approach
Contrary to wetlands or moderate climates, the understanding of carbon exchange between ecosystem and atmosphere in arid and semi-arid environments is more challenging due to the sensible feedback of terrestrial ecosystems to environmental variability. Especially in the savannah regions of South Africa the biomes are strongly affected on the one hand by low and sporadic precipitation and on the...
متن کاملIndigenous Plant Genetic Resources of South Africa
South Africa is considered to be a “hotspot” for biodiversity and more than 22,000 plant species occur within its boundaries. This represents 10% of the world’s species, although the land surface of South Africa is less than 1% of the earth. The country is divided into seven biomes and into 68 vegetation types (Low and Rebelo 1996). The Savanna biome covers 33% of the surface of the country, bu...
متن کاملRangeland Degradation Assessment in the South Slope of the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, Northeast Libya Using Remote Sensing Technology
The degradation rate of Mediterranean steppes, especially in North Africa is 1% per year, and this considered a high rate of degradation. This study conducted in 2014 in the south slope of the Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, northeast Libya to quantify the vegetation recovery rate and assess selected Vegetation Indices (VIs) for mapping rangelands degradation status using remote sensing technology. Throug...
